Congratulations on your new iPhone purchase! This is the moment you’ve been waiting for, right? Don’t overthink, don’t stress. In this article, I will guide you through a few steps to take after buying a new (or used/second-hand) iPhone.
Step 1: Turn on your iPhone
Press and hold the button on the right side of your iPhone until the Apple logo appears on the screen. Your iPhone will then power on, and you will be taken through the initial setup process.
Step 2: Initial Setup
During the initial setup process, you will be prompted to choose a language, country, and region, as well as connect to Wi-Fi. Select English and Malaysia as usual. You will also be asked to set a passcode (not a password, but a passcode). Remember to use a passcode that others don’t know. Avoid using a passcode that is too easy. Choose something more challenging, like 465738 or 017493, so that others will have a hard time guessing your passcode.
I recommend using a 6-digit passcode instead of a 4-digit one. With a 6-digit passcode, it is more difficult for others to randomly guess it. Also, don’t use the same passcode as your ATM bank card PIN!
Step 3: Create an Apple ID
Your Apple ID is the most important part of using an iPhone. It allows you to access the App Store to download applications such as WhatsApp and TikTok. If you don’t have an Apple ID yet, you will need to create one during the setup process. Especially if you’re using an iPhone for the first time, you probably don’t have an Apple ID yet.
A tip I want to give you is to use your Gmail account as your Apple ID. This is because if you ever forget the password you used, it will be easier to reset it using your Gmail account. It can be more challenging if you create an Apple ID using an iCloud account and then forget the password later!
Step 4: Customize Your iPhone to Suit Yourself
After setting up your Apple ID, you can now start customizing your iPhone to reflect your personality. Change the background wallpaper to a picture of a car or your favorite artist. You can also add widgets to the Home Screen, such as a weather widget. Additionally, you can modify the settings in the Control Center to make your daily tasks more convenient.
Step 5: Download Apps from the App Store

Open the App Store (the application with the blue logo in the image above) and you can start exploring and searching for apps that interest you! Typically, as true users in Malaysia, we always go for WhatsApp, so you can download it right away. And what else? Of course, you must download TikTok, right?
One tip I have for you is to avoid entering your bank account number or credit card number into the App Store system if you don’t intend to download paid apps. It can be risky if a child or a younger sibling accidentally downloads paid apps without your knowledge, which can lead to an unfortunate situation!
In conclusion, setting up a new iPhone can be an exciting yet overwhelming experience. Following these steps will help you start and set up your iPhone for success. Remember to take your time, customize your iPhone to your preferences, and enjoy all that it has to offer. Happy exploring!
